Dijo tsa Botswana - The Food of Botswana!

Introduction:

Botswana is a landlocked country – this means that it is close to other countries, but not near the ocean. So, it is not common to find seafood in Botswana. But other types of farming are very common! Since Botswana is landlocked, this means Botswana relies on agriculture or growing plants and raising animals for food! Most of all, Botswana is known for its beef. Cattle has been a very important aspect of the economy in Botswana for many years. In fact, beef production is responsible for 80% of Botswana’s agricultural exports or things they sell to other countries.

So far in Botswana, food is one of the things that I have enjoyed most! Botswana's traditional food (dishes that have been eaten for many years) is delicious – and there’s so much to try. From meat to vegetables, I have enjoyed being adventurous with new food. Food is a big part of the culture here in Botswana. It is something that you will find at every special event like weddings! 

Food can change depending on where you are in the country. You will find slightly different food in the north than in the south. For example, in the northeast, people eat Dilele – a cooked leaf from a plant called okra. But in the northwest, you will find something called Tswii – it is like a potato, but it grows in the river.
