Even Flowers in Paradise Sometimes Have Thorns

Introduction:

Mauritius is a tiny tropical island located very far out in the Indian Ocean. Palm trees sway in the wind and sea urchins can be seen along most beaches. The island is surrounded by beautiful blue water with beaches easily accessible to all who live here. The waters are generally calm and welcoming, allowing sunbathers to float carelessly while sipping coconut water straight from a coconut.  However, cyclones are not uncommon in the summer season, and they can wreak havoc on the tiny island. There is a dormant volcano in the center of the island, but it has not erupted in a very long time. Locals will tell you there are no poisonous animals anywhere on the island, but the same doesn't hold true for the ocean.

What makes this environment special or different?:

The environment in Mauritius is unique for a number of reasons.  It vastly differs from the mainland of Africa, although both get very hot. Mauritius is a tropical island with high humidity, high temperatures, and a laidback "beachy" lifestyle. Locals are friendly and love to camp in tents on beaches every weekend.

One of the most unique things about this island is the way coral reefs circle entirely around it. From almost any beach on the island, you can see a line of waves breaking at a distance.
