Hey everyone!
This week I wanted to share a bit about food in Costa Rica.
Costa Ricans have an incredibly healthy diet. It’s not uncommon for people here to live past 100! In fact, part of the country has been designated as a blue zone: a special name given to parts of the world filled with centenarians (people who live to be 100 years or older). There are only 5 original blue zone regions in the entire world, and Costa Rica has one of them!
Here’s a list of some of my favorite Costa Rican dishes:
Gallo pinto— Gallo pinto is a mix of rice and black beans, often seasoned with cilantro, onion and garlic. It’s a simple plate, but packs so much flavor. It’s a staple in every home here and is a great companion to any meal.
Casados— A Casado is a large plate which includes cooked plantains, rice, beans and meat (either chicken, fish, or pork). It’s a typical Costa Rican dish always served at Sodas (the Costa Rican equivalent of our American diners).
Tamales— Tamales are a super interesting dish, typically made for Christmas.
