Exploring Costa Rica's Transit Landscape

Introduction:

Hi everyone! This week I’m diving into how people get around in Costa Rica. It’s certainly very different from New York, to say the least! The only overlap between the two is the traffic!

How do people get around?:

Here in Costa Rica, people commute by either car, motorcycle or bus. There’s no train system here at all!

Unlike in New York City, the major cities in Costa Rica aren’t very walkable. There are hardly any crosswalks or lights for pedestrians, so trying to walk around can be quite challenging!

It’s much more common to see people walking from place to place in smaller towns such as in my town, La Paz. However, people will still commute by bus or car when traveling longer distances.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

The Peace Corps program prohibits volunteers from driving, unfortunately. So, for the most part, I take a bus to get from place to place, and, boy can it take long, to move about the country in this way! San José, the capital of Costa Rica, is notorious for its bad traffic. Around rush hour times, it’s not uncommon for drivers to be left in a complete standstill. A drive that would typically take 30 minutes might become an hour and 30!
