It started off really nice, with flat seas, calm winds and no clouds. Then we hit strong easterly winds and big easterly waves with plenty of rain and heavy clouds. There has also been a dust storm blowing over us (coming from the African coast) which makes the sky kind of hazy.
It was so exciting to see our first ocean creatures fairly quickly after we began the race. We saw some dolphins, and Ali even thought that one of the creatures that appeared briefly in the water near the boat was a whale. The rest of us are not so sure!
The sunsets at sea are spectacular. It’s a brief moment of calm and natural beauty before the long, dark night sets in. We also had a pod of dolphins swim in front of us for awhile, like they were escorting us through the waves.
