The team are all English so we are speaking English. It is also the accepted language of the sea, with a requirement for people to be able to speak or understand English if there is a need for a safety message or signal. The race organizers also use English to ensure that there isn’t any confusion.
We don’t need to use money as we had to bring everything with us, and there's nothing available to buy in the middle of the ocean. We bought all the food and safety equipment we needed before the race began, and it's already on the boat. I guess this means we’re saving some money, right?
We don’t need to buy water here, but we do have to make it ourselves. We have a machine that takes salty sea water and removes the salt via osmosis. By pushing the sea water through a very fine filter and adding some chemicals, undrinkable sea water becomes completely safe-for-drinking fresh water. Sea water will kill you if you drink too much, so our water-filtering machine is very important to us. We’re exercising hard as we row, but also getting soaked in sea water from the waves and having to wash regularly to avoid salt sores. This means that we’re reliant on the fresh water that we make to stay alive.
