This week we’ve had to row through lots of squalls (big storms at sea), which bring a few hours of very strong winds (up to 30-40 mph) and heavy rain before they clear and the sun comes back out and it gets really warm. This is because we’re starting to get close to the Caribbean. In a rowing boat, the wind is the most important aspect as we can’t move very fast, and if the wind blows in the wrong direction it can be hard work to move in the direction we want to go! As we get closer to the finish we’re hoping it’ll get better for rowing in.
As we’re in the middle of the ocean, we’ve seen loads of animals. We’ve been surrounded by dolphins, sharks, whales and flying fish that jump straight over the boat. It’s so quiet, so they come really close to explore us as we’re the new “thing” in their environment and they’ve not encountered us before. Dolphins in particular love playing around the boat and they’re a good luck charm for Submariners, so we were happy to see them.
