An Interview with Middle Schoolers

My family comes together to eat dinner every night.

What chores do you have at home?:

I help wash dishes and clean the house, like sweeping the floors.

We all run errands for our parents, like going to buy groceries at the store.

What jobs do your parents have?:

My mother sells motorcycles.

My dad sells gasoline and water.

My father owns a shop in Jakarta,* so he travels to Jakarta a lot.

My father is a businessman and works in an office every day.

*(Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia.)

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

We get to school at 6:20 a.m. and go to the classroom to talk with our friends before class. School starts at 6:45 a.m. every day. On Monday and Tuesday, school ends at 1:25 p.m.; on Wednesday through Friday, it ends at 12:45 p.m.

After school, we hang out, maybe grab something to eat with a friend for lunch and then go home around 2:00 p.m.

We have three different kinds of uniforms. One uniform we wear on Monday and Tuesday, the second on Wednesday and Thursday and the third on Friday.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

We all take a motorcycle, except Sherine--she rides in a car. Most people take a motorcycle. Usually, our father or mother drives us to school. Sometimes, an older brother or sister who can drive takes us to school on their motorcycle.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

We eat at the canteen* at school. We buy lunch from the school.
