Lessons and Carols

Introduction:

At Alkahawyne University, I got to learn about a tradition that brings the Christian community together over the holidays--and invites the Muslim community to join in.

What tradition did I learn about?:

At Alkahawyne University, I got to learn about a tradition that brings the Christian community together over the holidays--and invites the Muslim community to join in. Every year the school holds a "Lessons and Carols" event to celebrate the holiday season. Lessons and Carols is an event where the community comes together and sings Muslim songs. It is unique because it includes all people and all religions.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

This community has developed this tradition as a way to acknowledge and respect the Christian community, while also bringing many people together to celebrate the ending of the year. The event also serves as a fundraiser. People have the choice to donate money that will be used to buy blankets for migrants to keep warm.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Lessons and Carols brings together people from different religions, giving each some insight into one another's traditions while also celebrating that which make every person more alike than different.
