The Mighty Sahara Desert

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

While in the Sahara Desert, I stayed in a desert camp that was in an oasis. An oasis is an isolated area in a desert that can provide a water source and has some form of vegetation. Without these necessities, living in the Sahara Desert becomes challenging. The need for food can be supplied by eating insects or wild animals that are found in the Sahara Desert.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

The Sahara Desert is a difficult place to survive, and the area is always short on food and water. Those who live in the oasis have to drive back into a nearby town to buy more food. It is important to always have water because you can get very dehydrated in the Sahara Desert. There are not any hospitals in the desert. Getting medicine and seeing a doctor is very hard when you are hurt or sick.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

People that live in the Moroccan part of the Sahara Desert are Berbers. Berbers are a group of people who have lived in Morocco for thousands of years and have adapted to this challenging environment. They know where to find food and water, and can hunt for food if they necessary. Typically people who live in the desert are nomads. Nomads are people who are always on the move and don't permanently stay in one place. They take their families with them and carry all their belongings and possesions.
