Living like the Dutch

My daughter is studying medicine in university and is hoping to study abroad in Spain next year. I grew up in Nijmegen, only a ten-minute bike ride away from where I currently live! My parents still live in my childhood home, which makes it very convenient to visit them.

How do you get around?:

Like most Dutch people I bike almost everywhere! It takes me about 20 minutes to bike to work every day. My husband and I do own a car, but we mainly use our bikes or take the train if we are going somewhere farther away. Although only three of us live in our house we own six bikes! My husband owns a standard three-gear bike, a mountain bike and a special bike for his work. I own a standard three-gear bike and a mountain bike and Lieke only owns a standard three-gear bike.

What types of clothing do you like to wear?:

I like to wear dresses and blouses to work. I own a lot of tights, stockings and scarves because it can get pretty chilly during the winter here in Nijmegen.

What do you like to do in your free time?:

During holidays I like to travel with my family. On the weekends, my husband and I will often go for bike rides in the countryside to the east of Nijmegen, close to the German border.

What language(s) do you speak? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak both English and Dutch. English is the language spoken at my workplace, but I speak Dutch with all my family and friends. "Hallo" is the more formal "hello" and "hoi" is the more casual "hi" in Dutch.

Do you have pets?:

No, I do not have any pets.
