Feeding the World

Introduction:

The United States exports a lot of food to other countries that do not have farms. In fact, the U.S. exports more food than any other country in the world! However, The Netherlands is second in line. This is quite remarkable because the U.S. is around 200 times bigger than The Netherlands! This means that even though the Netherlands is a tiny country, they have a lot of farms and produce a lot of food.

What makes this environment special or different?:

The Netherlands is much smaller than U.S. so how do the Dutch find room for everyone to live while also leaving enough room for farming? It is possible because people mostly live in urban (city) environments, leaving a lot of land in the country (rural) open for farming. As you can imagine, urban and rural areas are very different from one another!

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

The farmland is very peaceful and quiet. The Dutch use this space to grow crops and to raise cows, sheep, horses, pigs and chickens. City life is almost the exact opposite. People live in apartment buildings where many people live close to one another. This also means they can bike everywhere they need to, from grocery stores to work. But living close together also means that they do not own much land. Although cities and farms are very different, the Dutch need both to survive.
