A famous tradition they have is buying chocolate letters, I tried it and found it very lekker (Do you remember what lekker means? It means "tasty"!).
The community has the Glow tradition for multiple reasons. The first is that Philips is celebrating their founding city and the second is that it is a fun event for families to go to and many of the events are interactive and made specifically for children. The Sinterklaas parade began in order to celebrate Christmas time. Each city holds their own Sinterklaas parade on a different weekend starting in the middle of November until right before Christmas in December.
Both the Glow and Sinterklaas traditions are involved in the Dutch sense of gezellig (coziness and togetherness). Glow has become a beautiful way to get people to enjoy spending time walking outside with their family close to the Christmas holiday. Christmas itself is a very energetic and happy time in The Netherlands. People dress up in Sinterklaas costumes and walk through the streets eating stroopwaffles (small waffle-like cookies filled with caramel) and appeltaart (apple pie). The community uses traditions like Eindhoven Glow and the coming of Sinterklaas to bring people together during the holidays.
