Food in Ireland

Introduction:

While I've been here in Ireland, I have tried to find different foods to experience. I was surprised to find that many of the foods I eat at home are also found here in Ireland, although they sometimes have a different name. After checking out the grocery store, I decided to introduce my friends from Germany to an authentic southern U.S. meal. 

What food did I try?:

The meal I wished to prepare was a favorite of mine, southern biscuits and gravy. However, a trip to the grocery store left me frustrated. I needed sausage, milk, flour and biscuits. Instead, I found that these items are quite different in Ireland. For instance, "black and white pudding" is not at all what it sounds like. It is actually ground up pork meat and suet, or fat. I used this for my sausage. I searched the market but found no kind of canned biscuits or frozen biscuits. When I asked the clerk to direct me to butter biscuits I was led to the cookie aisle. Yes, I was very confused! After reading a few boxes, I realized that the people here call their cookies "biscuits". So instead, I decided to use a few of the freshly made rolls in place of my butter biscuits. Milk and flour, on the other hand, are thankfully the same in Ireland.  

How did I feel when I tried it?:

When we sat down to eat my attempted meal, I was disheartened. It tasted nothing like my homemade biscuits and gravy back in Tennessee.
