A Snapshot into the Lives of Korean High Schoolers

What jobs do your parents have?:

The variety of jobs mentioned were elementary school teacher, university professor, nurse, office worker, businessman, bank teller, car mechanic, and government worker. The most common job was a teacher!

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

School begins at 8:10 a.m. but most students take the bus and arrive between 7:40 and 8:00 a.m. I ride the school bus with the high schoolers in the morning and the middle schoolers on the way home! School officially ends at 6:00 p.m. but students living in the dorms continue to study until 10:00 p.m.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Most students get to school by bus and a few are taken to school by their parents. Our school is far from town so no one walks.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Students said crab soup (꽃게탕), kimchi stew, ramen, fried eggs, pork, chicken, sandwiches, and school food. Ramen was a popular food among my students!

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

Korean is spoken at school except for English and Chinese classes.  "Hello" in Korean is "안녕하세요" (annyeonghaseyo).

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Korean names are almost always three syallbus with their last name being said first. Common last names are Kang, Lee, Kim, Yoon, and Jung. Some student names are Jung In, Yun Woo, Jun Seo, Byung Jun, and Hyun Woo. I have a student named Baek Ho which translates to White Tiger!
