Valentine’s Day is the ultimate day to celebrate love and friendship! In America, its a day filled with colorful cards, sweet treats, and maybe chocolate and flowers from your secret admirer. Both boys and girls love to use Valentine’s Day to express their true feelings. Things work a little differently in South Korea, though. They still celebrate Valentine’s Day but they also have two other days devoted to love….or the lack of it.
In Korea on Valentine’s Day, only girls give gifts to their friends or crushes. The gift is typically chocolate, either store-bought or handmade. One month after, on March 14th, is "White Day". This is a day when the boys return the favor and give back white food like white chocolate, marshmallows, candy, and treats. There is one more day a month later called "Black Day". This is an unofficial holiday on April 14th for single people. On Black Day, you eat a dish called jajangmyeon which is noodles with a black bean sauce. It may sound gross at first but it's delicious! Black Day is usually celebrated with other friends who did not receive any chocolates or candies on Valentine’s Day or White Day.
