The Heavy Food in the North

Latin, Turkish and Indian are my top favorite cuisines, so I tend to stick to those options even here in Spain.

 

How is the food prepared?:

Restaurants here in Spain have a menu called menu del dia, which means menu of the day and includes options for a drink, bread, a starter, an entree and a dessert. Usually, they have large batches of these meals pre-made for customers and you'll receive your food very quickly. They also come at affordable prices, some starting as low as 10 euros!

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

As noted previously, the food in Asturias is a bit different from what you would get in other regions of Spain and by the coast. Historically, Asturias was known for its coal mining industry, which required a lot of manual labor. This meant that meals here needed to be hearty to provide enough energy for the workers to survive the long work day.

The climate also plays a part in the cuisine here. As this region is colder than others, the food is heavier and hot dishes are more common. Compared to warmer places where they may serve cold, refreshing dishes like salads and ceviche, you don't see those as much here.
