What were the chances that Oviedo, the city I'm living in, would be named the gastronomy capital of Spain for 2024? Unfortunately for me, my food palate and pickiness make it hard for me to enjoy all of the options they have here!
I knew prior to arriving that this was going to be a challenge, as I was not a big fan of food from Spain the previoius time I was here. There are some foods I do enjoy specific to this region, such as fabada, a pork and bean stew, and their famous cachopo, which is like a chicken cordon bleu, except made with veal surrounding the ham and cheese rather than chicken.
Aside from these local dishes, since I am in the capital city of the region there are also some international options for food. These tend to be my go-to when I eat out. This area is host to a diverse group of people from all over the world, many of whom brought their local cuisines to this region. One of my roommates is vegan, so when we go out to eat, we try to find something that will allow both of us to enjoy the food. We found that Asian and Indian food was perfect for this. When I go and eat by myself, I prefer to go to local Latino restaurants. This most resembles what I would eat back home.
With all the traveling around, I try to find things I like to eat in these other cities and countries, too. I found that I enjoyed the food and seasonings used in Morocco.
