Meet Angus, a Hong Kong Kid

What jobs do your parents have?:

Mum takes care of me and my brother. My dad is a chef. My dad works at a restaurant in a hotel.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

I leave the house at 7:30 most mornings. I need to get to class at 8:00. Class ends at 3:15 usually, but my teacher never ends on time and it is the worst!

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Mum will walk with me to school. It is a five-minute walk. If I didn’t do homework yet, I do it then before class. Or I talk to friends.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

In my school, first- through fourth-year students eat in the classroom. Fourth- through sixth-year students eat on the roof.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

A lot of times we just say hello or joh-zhun ("Good morning" in Cantonese) to the teacher. Most of the time, we only speak English in English class. The other classes are in Chinese. We also have to learn Mandarin (the official dialect of China) when we go to Chinese class.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

I usually call my friends by their Chinese names: So Tze Ho, Yin Wai King, Cheung Pak Yim. (Note from Kachun: I have noticed that many Hong Kong-ers will adopt an English name like what Angus did. It is also important to note that Chinese names often go in a last-name-then-first-name order.)
