This week I traveled to Giethoorn, which is nicknamed the Venice of the Netherlands because it lacks roads. Back in the day, they even had to transport cows by small wooden boats! My friends and I took a canal boat ride, visited a museum and got a yummy slice of appeltaart (apple pie).
Giethoorn is actually the farthest that I have been so far! It is about two hours north of Amsterdam by train. The second farthest place I visited was the Hague, which is about an hour south. The Hague is the center of Dutch politics and is home of the Dutch Parliament.
There are many modes of transportation here (bike, train, bus, tram) and everything is quick and convenient. Since I am a resident here, I have a personalized OV-chipkaart, which I use to check-in and check-out every time I use public transportation. For my commute to work, I ride my bike 30 min, take a 40 min bus and finish with another 10 min bus.
The most interesting place that I visited was the Stedelijk Museum, which holds a diverse collection of Dutch and French modern and contemporary art. I don’t know much about art, but the museum offered a unique experience.
