Bogotá is a large city, whose only form of mass public transportation is the bus. There are two main bus systems: TransMilenio and El Sistema Integrado de Transporte Público (the Integrated Public Transportation System), known as SITP. TransMilenio is the faster bus system, with huge buses and eight bus lines that run throughout the city. SITP buses are generally smaller, but because SITP has consolidated many other independent bus operators, it has hundreds of bus lines around the city!
People get around mainly by car or bus.
The bus is very convenient here, because you can get almost anywhere you need to go in the city. Unfortunately, the buses are not very efficient. They don't really follow a set schedule, so you never know if you'll be waiting two minutes, a half an hour or if the bus will even come at all! Since so many people rely on the buses, sometimes a full bus will arrive to a stop and people will try to forcibly squeeze themselves through the door. Often, so many people will try to squeeze onto the bus that the doors aren't able to close. When this happens, the bus has to wait for people to either get off, or rearrange themselves so that the doors can properly close.
