Sugarcane drinks are prepared by taking a sugarcane stalk and carefully putting it through a juicer that squeezes all of the liquid out of the plant. For coffee, farmers pick the red fruit and remove its shell to harvest the beige bean inside. After dying and roasting the bean, it takes on the darker color that you'd recognize from your local grocery store.
Sugarcane, coffee and açai are connected to the local environment because these plants require hotter climates in order to grow. It is easier for farmers to transport local plants to supermarkets, restaurants and food stands. This is the main reason why these types of plants are common in the Brazilian diet.
