Getting Around in Lavras

Introduction:

Since Lavras is a small town, there are no airports or trains to travel to other places. However, the community often tries to help one another move around in Lavras. Also, many people use creative ways to travel to other places.

How do people get around?:

Normally, people will take a taxi or the bus when they need to travel outside of town. But inside of Lavras, walking can be difficult because it is very hot and hilly. Instead, people might use a carona, which means that they will get a ride from another person if they stick out their thumb and wait near a carona sign. There are many official carona signs around town, especially at the university.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first, I felt strange taking a carona because I didn't know the driver. In the United States, this is not a common practice and I felt worried about getting into the car with a new person. Now, I only use a carona if I am on the university campus because most of the drivers are other professors and students. Other times, I will wait for the bus if I need to travel to other places.
