A Day in Lizzy's Mauritian Life

We are sharing it with another person who is here conducting research. We also have a nice balcony where we sometimes eat our food. You can see the ocean from there. We also have to dry our clothes on a drying rack on the balcony because there are no dryers here."

What chores do you have at home?:

"My chores include cleaning my room, mopping, cleaning the dishes, sometimes cooking, hanging my clothes on the drying rack, and taking the trash out to the big trash can in the parking lot."

What jobs do your parents have?:

"My mom has a job where she does independent research on diabetes because the rate here is so high. Sometimes she has me help her chart how many street food stands there are in certain areas here in Mauritius. My dad is currently a prison guard back in the United States."

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

"Since I am being homeschooled here, school starts when I wake up and ends whenever I finish, so that way I don't have to worry about homework. I am being homeschooled because I am trying to stay in line with what my school back in the United States is doing so that I don't get behind. It is also because school here starts in January and it wouldn't make much sense for me to do two half years of school here."

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

"Since I'm homeschooled, I just do my school at the desk in my room, but I have noticed that most kids walk home from school with their friends and sometimes pick up street food on the way home. They rarely ever have adults with them. They also are usually wearing school uniforms."
