A Day in Lizzy's Mauritian Life

Who is your favorite famous person?:

"I really like a person named Jacques Cousteau. I really like him because he was so passionate about conserving the ocean and he loved exploring. He is very inspirational to me. I also really like a man named Michael Phelps. He is a famous Olympic swimmer who has more than twenty gold medals."

What kinds of music do you listen to?:

"I listen to some of the same music you hear in the United States, but there is [also] a lot of European music. We go to a place . . . called the Institute Francais [to] borrow French music C.D.s. There's also a type of music called Sega where locals come together and sing some songs that sounds kind of like reggae music."

What would you like to be when you grow up?:

"Since I want to be a marine biologist, I am extremely lucky to be able to live on this island because every day I can get up and go to the ocean and find some new fish, and then come home, look them up on a fish identification chart, and try to identify them. Before I left the United States, I had a volunteer job at an aquarium where they are doing research on bamboo sharks."

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?:

"One place that I've always wanted to go is Peru because there are pink dolphins there.  While pink is not my favorite color, I find it interesting that they are so different from the dolphins you typically see. I also really would like to go to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia before it gets all bleached out and dies because of the damage occurring in our oceans from not taking care of them. Finally, I would love to go and see the beautiful snow-capped Alps."
