The Students of Puli, Taiwan

Introduction:

The following answers are from a cultural exchange event I did with a class of about 25 students in an English class at a high school in Puli, Taiwan. Different students gave different answers, so I selected some of the answers I received and, with the help of a local English teacher, translated these into English.

I have put some translations and notes in parentheses throughout the article to help you understand some of the ideas from students!

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

"For breakfast, I eat baozi (包子, a steamed bun that is often filled with vegetables or meat)"

"Lunch is served at the school and usually consists of some vegetables or qingcai (青菜, a Chinese word for vegetables), some meat like zhurou (豬肉, pork), and mifan (米飯, rice)."

"I usually eat whatever my parents make for me, but eating out here isn't too expensive, so sometimes we'll go eat huoguo (火鍋, hot pot is where food is prepared in a soup over a heat source in front of the diner) or beef noodles."

What is your house like?:

"I live in an apartment in town. It isn't too big, but at least I have my own bedroom."
