Blueberries and blackberries spilled out onto the plate. I was so hungry. I took my spoon and scooped up a big bite of bread, fruit and sauce.
It was delicious and it wasn't too sweet. The only sugar in the recipe was the powdered sugar on top. The bread was not sweet and the berries were sour and tart. Blueberry dumplings are my favorite food in the Czech Republic.
The first step in making fruit dumplings is to prepare the dough. Mix together flour, butter, eggs and milk. Second, you must fill the dough with fruit. You can pick blueberries, strawberries, apricots or any other fruit that sounds tasty. Then, you boil the dumplings in hot water. Finally, you take the dumplings out of the pot and serve them with melted butter and powdered sugar. The younger children like to add cocoa powder as a topping as well.
This food is really popular in the summer and fall when fresh fruit is being harvested, like strawberries in the summer and plums in the fall. Most of the Czech people I know have their own gardens where they grow fruit for this recipe.
