I Get Around: Transportation in Germany

Introduction:

As a student, I am always looking for affordable ways to travel. For that reason, I have tried most forms of transportation available to me. Walking is the cheapest method of travel, but you cannot get very far on foot. Lucky for me, Europe is fairly well-connected by trains, planes and buses.

How do people get around?:

Within town, people take the street car (called the S-Bahn or Strassenbahn, which literally translates to street train). There are intercity buses as well that travel within and between the various suburbs of the city and downtown. Many people also ride their bikes. There are special lanes for bikes on most streets.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

The city I grew up in has zero public transportation and it is not easy to ride a bike around because there are few sidewalks or bike lanes. I love using the S-Bahn when I need it, but I prefer walking, which was also a method of transportation that I did not get to use much in the United States. For long distance travel, I love to take the long-distance buses. Flixbus is my favorite long-distance bus company. They have an app, and I can book rides easily from my phone.
