Kids Like You

What is your homework like?:

I think any kid here would say that it's hard. What about you? I think the difference here is that there is very little technology in classrooms, and there are few "extra" classes like art or music. There are a lot of workbook exercises, and homework here is called tamarin (sounds like tangerine).

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

After school, most kids rush home to play out in the streets with friends.  They play games like hide-and-seek or sit on the corner with a cell phone looking at TikToks. Overall, though, most boys play kora (soccer). It's massively popular here and the games are played anywhere that is open... on a hill, in the road or sometimes at a soccer field in the town.  Boys usually play soccer while wearing flip-flops.  They are really good at it!  They have amazing skills.

Who is your favorite famous person?:

Most kids, even the girls, usually name a favorite soccer player. Those guys are the national heroes who are showing the world the strength of Moroccans. They are the people of whom they feel very proud, and for whom they have reverence and love.

What kinds of music do you listen to?:

Most kids here don't listen to music in their free time. But, if they do, it's the national favorite called "Chabi". The older girls that I know tend to like Korean pop music.  Most often, though, they like any music from Morocco.

What would you like to be when you grow up?:

I've heard kids say they'd like to be a tour guide, engineer, teacher, policeman or professional kora (soccer) player.
