The coolest thing I saw was the caldera, which is the leftover remains of the island's biggest volcanic eruption that occurred many years ago. I also got to see a beautiful view of the Aegean Sea and the many surrounding islands next to Santorini. The ocean is always my favorite part of nature, no matter where I go. Its endless size and calm beauty amaze me.
I also got the chance to visit the famous Akrotiri remains on the island. Akrotiri was a settlement of the Minoans, an old civilization of people. The Minoans were the first inhabitants of the area. Unfortunately, a volcanic eruption in 1627 BC buried the city they built in volcanic ash.
Today, I got to walk around the three buildings that archaeologists have been able to excavate, or dig up, which has provided a lot of information about this old civilization. I learned that there are over 40 buildings buried underground, waiting to be discovered. These buildings are full of historical paintings and show the history of the Minoans. However, the Greek government is not able to pay, yet, for the excavation of these buildings due to the economic crisis the country is currently undergoing. Therefore, our tour guide believes that they will not be excavated, unless the country is able to get out of the economic crisis, or someone donates a lot of money.
