Walking down the street in Bengaluru is often a bit overwhelming. One of the most overwhelming parts is the smell. Bengaluru is often very smelly because there is usually a lot of trash on the streets. In fact, the trash problem in Bengaluru is so bad that Bengaluru, which used to be called the “Garden City”, is now often called the “Garbage City”!
Trash, or more formally “waste management”, is a huge problem in Bengaluru, and in all of India for that matter. With large populations comes a large amount of trash. The amount of trash generated by the city every day has greatly increased over the last 20 years. This trash problem in Bengaluru is made especially bad because many people just throw their trash on the ground instead of putting it in trash cans. There is very little recycling and few public trash cans. This means lots of trash ends up on the ground. The trash attracts rats and other wild animals and smells really bad.
Proper waste management is a huge need in Bengaluru because the current systems can’t keep up with the amount of trash being produced. Bengaluru's population has grown very quickly but the waste management system hasn’t changed to adjust for the increasing number of people.
