Colonization is when one nation takes over another nation or another part of the world. Great Britain is well known for colonizing many different nations throughout history including the United States and Botswana. In the United States, we declared our independence from British colonization on July 4, 1776. As a result, Americans celebrate national independence every year on July 4. Independence days are one of the most common national holidays around the world and these holidays are about celebrating freedom from colonization.
I learned about Boipuso (pronounced Boo-ee-pooh-soh) which is the traditional name for the Independence Day of Botswana. Boipuso is a national holiday that is celebrated every year on September 30. This is because on September 30, 1966, Botswana declared independence from Great Britain.
In the year 1885, Great Britain colonized Botswana. Since its independence from the British in 1966, Botswana has gone from being one of the poorest countries in the world to an upper-middle-income country. Botswana prides itself on being a peaceful, multicultural democracy. Like July 4 Independence Day in the United States, Boipuso is a time to go outdoors and celebrate national pride with family and friends.
