With people from at least 21 countries onboard, there are many languages spoken such as Tagalog, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch, German, Danish, Japanese, French, and more. The common language among everyone on the ship is English and this helps us work together. I grew up speaking French and have learned some Spanish as well, so I love hearing all the languages spoken onboard. If you speak another language or are learning another language, keep it up! It can be so helpful in your adult life.
None! Everything on the ship is provided for us. Food, water, we packed our own clothes, toiletries, and snacks. There are no stores. There are a few t-shirts and hats for sale with the JOIDES Resolution logo, but we have to pay with a credit card only. For people who work on the ship regularly, it’s a great way to save money.
$0! Water onboard is free and there are water filling stations throughout the ship. We are surrounded by ocean water, and you might know that ocean water is salty. Salty water is not good for our bodies, because it would dry out our cells. We didn’t bring all our drinking water though, so the ship has a desalination plant.
