English, Afrikaans, Dutch, and other Bantu variants. Among 73 languages are spoken here in South Africa!

What type of money is used here?:


The rand. The rand is weaker than the U.S. dollar, meaning that one could get 1 U.S. dollar for every 14 rand. This favorable exchange makes food and other stuff cheap for me!

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

A bottle of water costs 10 rand, which is about 70 cents in the United States.

What was the best meal this week?:

My best meal was definitely the ostrich burger that I had, along with a honeycomb peanut butter milkshake. I know that sounds like an unusual combination of flavors, but it is delicious!

What music did I listen to this week?:

I listened to a lot of heavy rock, which annoys my roomates sometimes! I also listened to James Blake's new album Assume Form and Toro Y Moi's new album Outer Peace

What activity was the most fun this week?:

I met up with some people from Stanford University who were also doing a foreign study program. While it is great to interact with locals, it is also nice to see some fellow study-abroad students!
