Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: Getting Around Ireland

Ever since I've been in Ireland, I've walked an average of 5 miles a day! When I travel to different cities on the weekend, I walk closer to 10 miles a day. This is a huge increase to the distance I walked in the United States!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first I was daunted by the bus system. Every other person seemed to know exactly where they needed to go while I was stuck examining the bus schedule and scrutinizing google maps for the nearest bus stop. I have found that bus drivers are extremely helpful. Several times, they have directed me towards the right bus and kindly explained which stop I should get out on.

I've only been here a month, and I have already grown to appreciate the convenience of the bus system. Gone are the days of expensive Uber trips! In fact, a bus trip from my University to downtown Limerick only costs about 1.60 euros. That's about $1.85, less than the cost of a cup of coffee.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

I have found that by using the bus and train system, I am able to talk to more locals. I have met several people by simply asking help with directions, or by sitting next to them on a trip to the city center. It's always fun to meet someone who also goes to the University of Limerick and strike up a conversation. They often have really great advice on where to travel next in Ireland.

Additionally, walking to class and while running my errands has allowed me to slow down and enjoy the scenery. I am able to notice all the gorgeous plant and animal life. There is a trail on our campus that runs along the Shannon River.
