While this certainly isn't a dish intended for those on a diet, it tends to be accompanied with peas that you can have whole or mashed up. This may appease the more health-conscious traveler. In fact, mashed peas are a typical way to eat peas in the U.K., though I prefer the texture of the whole peas.
Fish and chips are definitely connected to the U.K. environment, given that the U.K. is an island and thus fish are the easiest source of protein for people to obtain. Furthermore, pub food and pub life itself are intrinsically connected to the local environment. Pubs are more than simply a bar or restaurant; they're a place where people gather to spend time with each other. Pubs have also been the source of different historical treasures, from notable political meetings that occurred there, to literary works that have been penned within their walls. Pubs have existed all throughout British history - in fact, pubs actually existed before conventional restaurants did! So when thinking about British food - keep in mind all the amazing foods and experiences that pubs have to offer. Oh, and of course, don't forget to try some fish and chips!
