Each human tower is the result of universal values such as teamwork, solidarity, self-improvement, the feeling of belonging and the integration of people of all ages, origins, races and social backgrounds. This is why human towers are only performed during special festivities and can only be learned through a lot of practice and precision.
The castells have their origins in a traditional folklore dance in the city of Valls. The steps of the dance were accompanied with the flute, which is still played today during the tower building. At the end of the dance a small human tower was built. The towers started becoming a phenomenon of their own, and rival groups started building higher and higher towers.
