Our News

There are also many mariachi that play around the city, so you get a free show!

What activity was the most fun this week?:

This week I went to the La Llorona show at Xochimilco. The show took place on the lake and told the ghost story of La Llorona, the wailing woman who haunts bodies of water. While the origins of the ghost story are pre-Hispanic, there are many interpretations told throughout Latin America. It was also a great way to get in the spooky spirit for Day of the Dead and Halloween!

What did I read this week?:

I've been reading Como agua para chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) by Mexican writer Laura Esquivel. It tells the story of Tita, a talented cook, whose recipes have magical effects on the eaters. Each chapter is a different recipe and part of Tita's life, so maybe I'll try making one of the recipes once I finish the book!

What games or sports did I play this week?:

I never played soccer growing up, but now I play a pickup game with some friends every once in a while! Soccer, or fútbol, is huge in Mexico. There are a total of 18 teams in Liga MX, each with its own rich history and rivalries. Lucha libre is also a fun way to get into Mexican wrestling. Lots of rich history and rivalries there, too!

Other news from this week:

We're getting closer to Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), which means the festivities have started in the city! There have been many parades already, plus a storm of visitors from all around Mexico. One of the parades this week was for alibrijes, brightly colored and mythical creatures that act as spirit guides.
