Sarrià, the barrio where I live, is trying out a new program that will encourage the community to recycle more and waste less. With this program, people are given designated bags for food waste, plastics, cardboard, glass, paper and other trash to separate and then put outside of their doors on a specific day for trash collection. For example, on Mondays, the glass will be collected, and on Wednesdays, the food waste, or compost, will be collected. It is very self-directed, which means that residents must be on top of their own consumption, and they are held accountable for their trash.
