When I first arrived in Ireland, I spent the first couple of weeks running into people and waiting forever to cross the street since I kept looking back and forth. In Ireland, everyone drives and walks on the left side of the road or sidewalk. The steering wheels in Irish cars are also on the opposite side of the car than in the United States. Ireland is a small country so you do not need to take a plane to get from one side to the other. Instead, you can take a bus, hop on a train or drive your car. I don't have a car in Ireland so I usually take the bus. There are two kinds of buses: ones that go through the city and ones that drive between the cities. Sometimes I take the train when going to another city, which is nice because the view is so pretty! The intercity buses are actually red and white double-decker buses. It is fun to go to the top floor and see the streets from up high, but it's hard to walk up the stairs while the bus is moving!
Cork has lots of bike paths and many people ride their bikes around the city. I walk to most places but will take the bus when I'm tired or carrying something heavy. There are other less widely used forms of transportation. I often see farm tractors driving down the road. There are boats going to the small islands off of Ireland, and in touristy towns, there are often carriages pulled by horses.
