The Wuhan Native

Introduction:

I’ve said it over and over, but Wuhan is a concrete jungle. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any wildlife. In fact, there’s one creature I don’t think I can escape from. Do you have any idea what I am referring to?

What does this creature or plant look like?:

This creature comes in all shapes and sizes and they are absolutely everywhere. Honestly, I feel like I can never get away from them. Everywhere I look, everywhere I turn, I feel like I’m running into this creature. Sometimes I even feel like I’m turning into one… have you guessed what is yet? It’s a Wuhan local!

How did I feel when I saw it?:

At first, I was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of people there were—and at all hours of the day and night. Every time I would make a comment about the mass of people, someone would ask me: 你来到中国以后,你发现中国人是不是真么多? (ni laiguo zhongguo yihou, na faxian zhonguo ren shi bushi zhenme duo?), or: “Once you arrived in China, you realize just how many people there are in China, right?”

Now that I’ve lived in Wuhan for almost two months, I am less and less surprised by the number of people I see; rather I am more shocked when there aren’t a lot of people. For example, when I see lots of empty seats on the metro, I wonder why or where everyone is. I’m much more used to crowded streets, metros and buses now.
