To ride on the U-Bahn I have to buy a ticket. The tickets are small and are made of paper. I can also buy a ticket on my phone using the Vienna transportation app. This app is called Wiener Linien, which means Vienna Lines.
Since the U-Bahn is underground, I have to use stairs or an elevator to go under the street. When I get underground I am inside the station. Inside the station it is imortant to find the right subway line to take me in the right direction. The city has five different lines that go to different parts of the city. Each line is a different color on the U-Bahn map. The lines are named with the letter U followed by a number. U1 is red, U2 is purple, U3 is orange, U4 is green and U6 is brown. There is no U5!
Traveling on the U-Bahn makes me feel like I live in a big city. The subway trains move very fast. The subway trains also come every five minutes. This means I never have to wait very long to take the subway. I take the subway to get to school, to go to museums, to go to the store and to see my friends.
Yes, the U-Bahn is very connected to the culture. Everyone that lives in Vienna knows the U-Bahn. Many people even have the map memorized! The U-Bahn stations are also important landmarks in the city. When I ask where someone lives, they usually don't tell me their street address. Instead they tell me what U-Bahn station is closest to their house. The station near my house is called Längenfeldgasse. This station is on lines U4 and U6.
