A Conversation with a Teacher in Southern Taiwan

It only takes two hours to get to Taipei from Kaohsiung. To get from Kaohsiung to Hengchun, I have to drive my car. I can either drive my car or walk to school every day.

What types of clothing do you like to wear?:

I like to wear shorts because it’s so hot and humid here in Taiwan. I dress pretty casually. I lived in Hawaii for college, and I noticed that people there wore casual clothes, such as slippers or sandals. We went to the beach a lot in Hawaii, so it was easier to just wear slippers most of the time. But in Taiwan, if we go to work, we have to wear actual shoes and not sandals!

What do you like to do in your free time?:

I have many hobbies that are always changing! I really enjoy going to the beach, hiking and watching Korean T.V. dramas. I recently watched one called “Under the Queen’s Umbrella.” When I’m in Kaohsiung, I like to hang out with my family and search for good restaurants. All my friends moved to Taipei for work and to meet more people, but when they’re in Kaohsiung I enjoy seeing them.

What language(s) do you speak? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak Chinese Mandarin, Taiwanese, which is a dialect of Chinese Mandarin and English. I grew up speaking Taiwanese at home and Mandarin in school. We learned English in school, but I didn’t really know how to speak it or understand it until I went to college in the United States. To say Hello in Mandarin you say 你好 (ni hao), and to say hello in Taiwanese you say, li-ho.

Do you have pets?:

I don’t, right now, but I used to have a dog named Lucky when I was a kid.
