Everyone in Ecuador loves seafood and, they love ceviche even more. So, I figured I’d see for myself all of the reasons why it was so popular. However, I realized that this was not the kind of meal that my taste buds could get used to.
This dish is a bowl of soup made from the juicing of citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes. Ceviche not only uses fruits and veggies but, it typically has shrimp and fish along with it. I am not a fan of shrimp but, I was able to eat it with just fish. There was one major issue, the fish isn't cooked on a stove but it is cooked over time using only the citrus juice. The taste of the fish was not good to me.
I gave the dish another chance but, with one major change, from slightly cooked fish to steamy, cooked chicken.
There is famous dish here called Ecuadorian Ceviche. It is a delicious, citrus soup mixed with fish, sliced or diced vegetables, and fruit juices. Because it is prepared with seafood, it is served best in cities next to the Pacific Ocean, like Guayaquil and Puerto Lopez. Luckily, I live in the perfect spot for ceviche on the coast. Because I do not eat shrimp, it took a while for me to find a restaurant that served it with just fish, ceviche de pescado.
