Freedom, Peace and Culture

This was to show that Ecuador was once a part of a big group called Gran Colombia. Two important people who ran the group, Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín, helped make Ecuador a nation of its own.

Traditional dress-up in parades and remembering important people is just one way they keep up with their country's story. They also have a series of holidays for each city and for the parts of their national flag. On National Flag Day, September 26th, I learned about the colors of the flag. Red stands for all of the battles. Blue stands for the skies and seas. Yellow stands for freedom and the brightness of the sun.

They also have a National Shield of Arms Day each year on October 31st. On this day, they like to discuss and celebrate the meaning of every symbol on the shield in the middle of the national flag. Students all over the country had posters full of beautiful colors and drawings, too. Do you like to draw about your country in class?

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Ecuador is a place that values the rich culture and land that they fought for in independence. When they saw that their land and people were being damaged by the King of Spain, they took charge and won the victory of their country back. They are happy to be able to keep up their natural diversity in plants, mountains and animals. They like to show how much they appreciate nature through symbols and by allowing animals to live freely in the country. The symbol of water in the national flag shows the Guayas River. It helped to bring a lot of good business to Ecuador and shows that they are rich and wealthy. This gave them power to stand on their own when they became independent.
