Traditional Polish Food

Introduction:

One of the wonderful things about living in Poland is being able to walk throughout the city each day and stop by the grocery store every day on my way home from work to pick up fresh food!  There are small grocery stores on almost every corner, and many people visit the grocery store every day. The word for grocery store in Polish is sklep spozywczy. There are several different grocery stores named after animals. There's even grocery stores named after a frog and a ladybug!

Poland is known for their variety of soups. They have almost any type of soup that you could imagine. One of their most famous is called "Barszcz czerwony" or red beet soup. This soup is bright red in color and sometimes has meat and potatoes added to it. They have warm and chilled versions of this soup. Another famous soup is filled with sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) and sausage and is very nice to have in the winter. They even have a soup called "Flaki." Can you guess what would be in this soup?  It actually has cow stomach in it! I took a cooking class here and they taught us how to make parsnip soup. I had never heard of this type of soup before, but it was quite good! Polish food also includes much pickled or fermented food. You can get pickle soup or almost any type of pickle.

One of the most famous Polish foods that are known all over the world is pierogi.
