Polish Traditions

This is a soup made from sour or fermented rye flour and often has sausage and eggs.

The end of the Easter season includes a day called Smigus Dyngus (Wet Monday). This is celebrated the day after Easter. You have to be careful walking around the town on this day because it is tradition to have water thrown on you. People may throw cups of water or even water balloons at you. This holiday is very old and they started celebrating it hundreds of years ago. This day is to signify the start of spring. It is believed that it is a blessing to be soaked with water.

Birthdays are also a very special tradition in Poland. They have a birthday song called Sto Lat which means "one hundred years". This song basically wishes you to have a 100 years of good health and wishes. In Poland, you actually celebrate two special days every year, your birthday and your Name Day. Every day of the year has a specific Polish Name Day where everyone with a certain name celebrates. Name Day is traditional because Polish babies are often named after saints. For example, if your name is Jozef, your Name Day is May 1st every year and you celebrate this day with everyone else named Jozef. Would you like to celebrate Name Day in the United States?

Finally, another Polish tradition is Zaduszki (All Souls' Day). I will further discuss this holiday below.
