When you first arrive in a country, you never quite know what types of food you will soon be eating! One of my favorite things to do when I first move to a country is to go to the grocery store where there are always so many different types of food and ingredients that I have never seen before. I have learned that my first visit to a grocery store in a new country will always take much longer than I might expect it to! The combination of having to learn about new types of foods, translating from a different language and trying to pay in a new currency is always tricky and time-consuming! At the same time, this is a really fun experience because it shows you what it is like to live in that country.
Once I arrived in Paragay, I made an effort to try all of the different types of traditional foods. Doing this makes you become more aware of the country and its culture. Many of the classic dishes here are made from starches, such as corn, wheat and cassava. These starches are used to make bread or dough and generally are mixed with cheese and other dairy products in the process.
One famous food that I have tried is called sopa paraguaya, which means 'Paraguayan soup.' However, it looks more like cornbread that you find in the United States! How is this a soup? That is a great question. I asked the same thing!
