Nature News

People driving on the roads will even wait very patiently while animals are crossing the road. Sometimes, the animals will wear a bell. This is so that people can hear the animals when they are mozeying around the village.

What was the coolest thing I saw in nature this week?:

This week, I saw a spider called a flattie! These spiders are very common in Botswana. They like to hang on the walls, and they run very fast. Their real name is Selenopidae, but most people use the nickname 'flattie' for short. The name is very fitting for them because they hug the wall appearing as if they are flat when you look at them from afar. Even though I was a bit afraid of these spiders when I first arrived in Botswana, they are harmless! So, I don't mind when they come into my home and hang out on my walls now.

Other Nature News from this week:

Now that it is April, some areas in Botswana are expecting Mopane worms! These are the caterpillars that I wrote about in my Field Note - Food. Mopane worms come twice a year - in December and then in April. However, this year has been very dry so the caterpillars did not come in December. Now that it's April, I'm crossing my fingers that I will get to see them crawling around! If not, hopefully, next December there will be enough rain for them to come.
