This week, I have been traveling a lot! Currently, I am in Palapye, Botswana. To get to Palapye – first I left Masunga and traveled to Francistown. From Francistown, I went to Palapye. All in all, this took me a little over three hours.
The farthest that I have traveled in Botswana is to a place called Kasane. To get to Kasane, I first had to travel from Masunga to Francistown, then from Francistown to Kasane. In total, this trip is 358 miles.
In Botswana, there are a few common modes of transport. Many people have their own car. As a volunteer, I don’t! So, I use combis, buses and taxis. Combis and buses are used to get from one village to another. A combi is like a big van or a very small bus. In comparison, a taxi is a great option to get around the village. A short-distance taxi ride will cost eight pula (pula is the currency in Botswana). A long-distance taxi ride will cost 33 pula.
One of the coolest things that I saw in nature this week was a bird called the Lilac Breasted Roller! This bird is really awesome because its feathers have so many different colors. Here’s another fun fact: this bird used to be the national bird of Botswana!
